Time Changes Everything... and NothingYosemite Valley, CA

As we ring in a new year of promise, I'm going to be thinking of time. And how much I have to be grateful for at this time.
How time changes everything... this tree was young and strong once, and now a cycle of its life has passed. And yet...
How time changes nothing... these mountains surrounding us here are millions of years old. Ancient. Holding knowledge and secrets we can only imagine.

Time. It passes so quickly... in no time at all. I think the only time we really have is this very moment. I think it holds the keys to the kingdom.

Convict Lake
My first visit there. I love that feeling of the first time... your heart quickens, your eyes get all sharp and darty at the new sights, even my stomach jumps around a little at the excitement of NEW.

I'm big on the story too - and I love hearing them about the places I visit. Convict Lake was named after an incident in 1871, where a group 'o thugs, er, 'convicts' escaped from prison in Carson City. That's 200 miles away. So a buncha lawmen, er, a 'posse' chased those buggers all the way down here, where they had a shootout. The sheriff was killed, as was his Indian guide. They named the lake after the convicts, the mountain (Mt. Morrison) after the sheriff. Nobody named anything after the Indian guide, which strikes me as just pure ungrateful.

It was a moody, weathery day... kinda fitin' with the story that goes with it. But I just went with the vibe and took this picture to share with y'all.

The Auburn CourthouseAuburn, CA

Did you ever see the movie "Phenomenon" with John Travolta? It was made clear back in (gulp!) 1996. Dang, time flies when you're having fun. Anyway, it was made largely in and around Auburn, CA. The courthouse was featured prominently... it's just so iconic. And at night... it exudes such ghostly goodness! For this shot, I was waiting for the midnight lawn sprinkler cycle to finish so I could set up for the shot I wanted.
Waiting, waiting.
Hum-de-hum, looking around, checking email.
And looking up. heh.
Good times...

Another Bodie, CA MomentBodie, CA

This house was wavy, bent...like it had had some kind of otherwordly experience.
None of the others around it looked this way... and of course I had to go make up some fantastic story in my mind about how it almost made to some alternate time-space dimension, but fell out of the transfer and landed back on earth... altered. Twisted. Like its molecules didn't quite settle the same way.

Of course the skies that day totally set the stage for creating such a fantastical flight of fancy... I just went with it. As usual. ;-))

It's a Western Thing
Living in the Sierras, everything here is kind of Ponderosa-y. You half expect Ben and the boys to come riding up for a visit on their way to Virginia City. Ha! And even though the original colors in this shot were really gorgeous blues and greens... I got the urge to go all old postcard on it. I think it's trippy to see how a "today's world" shot lends itself so seamlessly to a window into "back then." And I do love the old West.

Merridale Apple Press
If you ever happen through Cobble Hill, B.C.... stop in at the Merridale Estate Cidery. They make 8 varieties of ciders - all from apples grown right there. This is one of their antique apple presses. First patented on May 27, 1855. Their new ones are much bigger, shinier and much more productive.

So tasty are their wares, you might just need a designated driver.
