DualityAustin, TX
I figured this photo of these dual steps in the Capitol Building of Austin sufficiently provided a blended, when-worlds-collide visual for the day, in that Alice in Wonderlandy manner of which I'm so fond. heh.

Jaws of the LawAustin, TX
"Be wary, my children and heed what I say
Just do as your told and ne'er do stray
For the jaw of the law will look and will check
And if you're not careful will clamp on your neck!"
---- from "Way of the World Children's Verses, Vol.1" circ. 1690.
---- which I made up, just now. grin

John's Garage
"My World...
My Universe...
My Garage."
I know this is true, 'cause it says so, right on the floor mat.
Run, Carousel, Run!
The Florentine streets are fraught with dangers, I discovered whilst there. Good lord! Hang on to your carousel horses!

Red's Old Fashioned CandiesVirginia City, NV
Remember "Bonanza"... the TV show of Cartwright family fame? Well, this candy store lives in THAT Virginia City... the one old Ben used to talk about all the time.

Virginia City was a silver mining boomtown and during its peak, Virginia City had a population of over 15,000 residents and was called the richest city in America. Heck, they pulled around $400 million worth of silver out of the ground.

But my favorite story is of a young Samuel Clemens, who worked for the newspaper "Territorial Enterprise" during the 1860s under the pen name Dan DeQuille. Whilst writing for the local rag, he also started using another pen name: Mark Twain.

Seems old Mark, er Dan, er Samuel got mugged whilst walking home on one November 10, 1863. (hey, it was in the paper!). He was relieved of his watch (worth $300 at the time) and money. The kicker: the mugging was a practical joke pulled by Sam's friends. Ahhh, those crazy kids!

He got his goods back, but was peeved for a good long time. Even wrote about it in "Roughing It", published in 1872.

Let that be a lesson to y'alls. Don't be crank-prankin' your friends who might grow up to be famous writers. Or photographers. Cause everybody will remember them, but… what was your name again?

Titanic Bully Rampart GoonSanta Cruz, CA

Just on the marquee alone, you see why I had to photograph this, yes?
Then there are those lights, the colors, the sheer vintage-esquetude of the Del Mar Theatre. They begged to be immortalized. Demanded it, really.

Carry on Santa Cruz!
As only you can and do...

A Room Fit For a ScholarPortland, OR

At the Lan Sun Chinese Garden in Portland, you can enjoy the tradition of tea, a peaceful stroll around the gardens, or meditate a little about life.

I don't know which I loved more... this room or its name: The Celestial Hall of Permeating Fragrance. The name is edging ahead at the moment. In this room, a gentlemen would learn the Four Arts of the Chinese Scholar. Those would be:

Qín: the musical instrument of the literati, the gǔqín...
Qí: a board game, which I understand is now called wéiqí...
Shū: or Chinese calligraphy...
Huà: or Chinese painting.

All the important things for a gentleman scholar to know...
As documented by a gentlewoman photographer.
