Big Deep Breath
In California, we can have long periods of blue sky, with no clouds. As a landscape photographer, this always makes me sad, since without a dramatic backdrop, images seem flat.
When we do have the kind of weather system that paints dramatic skies, I always drop everything! This happens most effectively during monsoon season in mid-late summer... which is when this was taken.
There's nothing like the light of a technicolor sunset bouncing off of the ocean and cliffs of the California coast!
I always use a tripod when I photograph scenes like this.. and here, used a slower shutter speed to soften the water just a bit. The waves and textures of the surf contributed to the active drama in this one, so I wasn't going for such a long exposure that it would eliminate the character. My goal was simply to soften it a bit, so it appeared dreamy but still real.
Moments like this, standing on the bluffs over looking the ocean always make me feel like I can fly!
