Home In the WoodsSierra Nevada Mountains, California

Growing up in the tiny house in the forest had been simple, good, rugged, fresh, precarious, thrilling and entirely not-to-be-missed. She was grateful for that start in life. It gave her legs.

They'd seen it, done it, been there too.
Nothing to do now but wait for spring.
Double TakeTruckee, California

Her mother summed it up and repeated it often: "Double your expectations of a positive outcome and have twice the fun." She thought it was good advice and sought to follow it to the best of her abilities.
Just Like Old People
Like It Was Only YesterdayBodie, CA

She remembered like it was only yesterday.
When the things that seemed so important at the time ended up not being so at all...
And those she barely noticed were the ones that defined everything.
The Corner RoomBodie, CA

A page turned at the edge of her mind...
The day she looked out the window
And realized it was time to go.
Where the Gingerbread People Live
Everyday on her way to school, she walked by where the gingerbread people lived.
And everyday she wondered what it would to be like to be warm, golden and freshly baked from the oven, loved by all.

The Light Show Next Door
She ran down the hallway as fast as she could, skidding around the corner in her stocking feet, sliding to a stop where her mother stood, all breathless excitement.
"MOM!!" They're having a light show next door!! Can we go watch it??"
Her mother smiled. She loved it when the neighbors did this.
"Let's go!" she whispered conspiratorially, as if they were about to do something wickedly fun. Truth was, she wouldn't have missed it for all the world.
The girl and her mother grabbed their coats, their hats and a mug of the cider that had been steaming on the stove all afternoon and nestled into a chair on the porch. The perfect viewing station.

"Let the light show begin!" They cried.
And it did.
Oh, how it did.

Summer Dreams
Sometimes in winter, I dream of summer.
I can't help it. It just happens.
I like the geese.
Other stuff happens that I like too.
